A few weeks ago we published a press release with Syabas about the integration of Tuxera NTFS into Syabas set-top boxes. Here’s a brief overview how everyone using Syabas products benefits from Tuxera NTFS inside. In the below pic you have Syabas’ Popcorn Hour set-top box at Tuxera labs ready to rock:

On the left you have two USB ports and on the right a removable hard drive bay circled. You can plug any NTFS-formatted portable hard drive or USB stick full of high-definition movies into the USB ports and it is plug & play. The same goes for the hard drive bay: take your NTFS-formatted drive from your Windows box and it works seamlessly with the Syabas media tank without any additional drivers.

We think Syabas’ example shows where the market is going. With both disk and file sizes growing, NTFS is currently the best — and in increasing cases the only — format option if you want your storage media to work plug & play with all computers from PCs to Macs and Linuxes as well as the latest consumer electronic devices.

Tuxera is a Finalist for the 2010 Red Herring 100 North America Award
Award Recognizes Tuxera as one of the 100 “Most Promising” Companies Driving the Future of Technology

San Diego, CA, June 22, 2010— Red Herring today announced that Tuxera was a finalist for the Red Herring 100 Award, a selection of the 100 most innovative private technology companies based in North America. The nominees are evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of strategy, and integration into their respective industries.

This unique assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the actual track record and standing of a company, which allows Red Herring to see past the “buzz” and make the list an invaluable instrument for discovering and advocating the greatest business opportunities in the industry.

“This year was especially difficult,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “Despite the global economic situation, there were many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products that we had a difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists. Tuxera shows great promise therefore deserves to be among the Finalists. Now we’re faced with the difficult task of selecting the Top 100 winners of Red Herring North America award. We know that this year’s crop will grow into some amazing companies that are sure to go far.”

Finalists for the 2010 edition of the Red Herring 100 North America award are selected based upon their technological innovation, management strength, market size, investor record, customer acquisition, and financial health. During the several months leading up to the announcement, hundreds of companies in the telecommunications, security, Web 2.0, software, hardware, biotech, and clean tech industries sent in their submissions to qualify for the award.

The Finalists are invited to present their winning strategies at the Red Herring North America Conference in San Diego, June 22-24, 2010. The Top 100 winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on June 24 at the event.

The basis is that SD Association has chosen exFAT as the file system in the next generation SD cards. Tuxera is here to provide the actual exFAT software for companies that embed the file system into their consumer electronics products. We published recently an Tuxera exFAT for Linux white paper at Interoperability vendor alliance to showcase the work we have done on exFAT. While the white paper is rather high-level, Tuxera is happy to provide more information on how the file system and licensing works for anyone interested. Tuxera exFAT is built on a portable and reliable code base and now available for Android, Linux and other operating systems.

Computex Taipei is finally over and done for 2010. A great event, with a lot of interesting electronics. It is clear the current semiconductor hotspot is here. From NAS systems to set-top-boxes, from cameras to phones, everything is packed together in Taipei or the nearby cities. In connection with Computex we did a joint press release with Microsoft on Tuxera exFAT for Linux.

The scenery in Taipei is unique. A quick escape from Taipei101 to Meokong for an afternoon tea shows everything from modern high-tech architecture to unreachable rainforest jungle in less than an hour. While it was raining almost every day I found the climate pleasant: warm but not too hot. You could walk with a T-shirt around the clock.

Tuxera exFAT Now Available for Android and Linux
First exFAT Solution for Embedded Linux Based on Microsoft Documentation

TAIPEI, TAIWAN–(Marketwire – June 1, 2010) – COMPUTEX — Tuxera, the leading designer of Windows-compatible file systems for Linux, Mac, and other platforms, today announced the release of Tuxera exFAT for Android and other Linux systems. Developed using technical documentation provided by Microsoft Corp., Tuxera exFAT provides outstanding performance and stability, and meets the latest SDXC memory card standards.

“The wait is over. I am thrilled to tell everyone we now have the world’s first exFAT implementation for Android. Thanks to our latest innovations and strong relationship with Microsoft, we can guarantee blazingly fast performance for flash drives and energy efficient consumer electronics,” said Mikko Välimäki, Tuxera CEO. “Tuxera’s exFAT for Android is not just the first to market, but it is also built on a very portable codebase that we will strive to make the de facto standard.

Tuxera is now forming partnerships with leading hardware, device, and operating system manufacturers to meet the growing demand for high-definition video and other embedded applications.

“exFAT is a modern file system designed to handle very large files, and we are pleased to support Tuxera’s development of an exFAT file system implementation,” said David Kaefer, general manager of Intellectual Property Licensing at Microsoft. “To provide necessary patent rights, Microsoft will offer a patent agreement that companies can sign if they are building a device that includes the Tuxera exFAT implementation.”

Tuxera is a member of the SD Association where it works together with exFAT host device and card manufacturers to enable a smooth transition from FAT to exFAT file system technology that lifts the device and file size limits for SD cards. For example, with Tuxera exFAT new SDXC compatible devices can record normal-length, full-HD videos.

Tuxera exFAT has been successfully tested on Android and other versions of Linux. To request an evaluation version of the product, please contact sales@tuxera.com. A consumer download version will be released later.

What is an open standard and what does it mean when a standard has an increasing number of patents? What are the implications of patenting to IT commodification trends such as open source software? This talk will discuss the inner meaning of the politically hot term “open standard” and the practical implications of having more and more patents in information technology standards from low-level algorithms to high-level functionality. The speaker’s main argument is that commodification meets its limits with increasing patenting, that has already put a price tag on open source. As a positive note, nobody should be scared as every intellectual property problem is solvable and also start-ups continue to enter the markets like before. The word “open” just will not equal to free. The talk draws from practical examples in European policy debates where the speaker has participated both as an academic discussant and more recently as the CEO of Tuxera, a company providing Microsoft Windows interoperable file system software solutions on Linux both as open source and proprietary versions.

Tuxera Celebrates Over 1 Million NTFS for Mac Downloads
The World’s First and Fastest NTFS for Mac Solution Defines the Standard

HELSINKI, FINLAND. Tuxera Ltd, the creator of the leading NTFS end exFAT file system drivers, celebrates the fact that its NTFS for Mac technology has exceeded 1 million downloads. Tuxera NTFS for Mac continues to define the gold standard for file system interoperability between Mac and Windows computers. The product has won awards for its extreme performance and flawless operation.

Tuxera leads the NTFS-3G open source project, which made a breakthrough in January 2007 being the first in the world to release NTFS read/write support on Mac OS X. Since then Tuxera has continued to innovate its market-leading technology. The high-performance Tuxera NTFS for Mac remains today as the world’s fastest NTFS for Mac solution. Read and write speeds have reached 100MB/s, and in practice the speed is usually limited only by the hardware.

“Make no mistake: we were the first on Mac, and remain the first both in stability and performance. We also do not charge for any performance and feature updates, which we frequently publish during the year. Our license is forever.” noted Mikko Välimäki, Tuxera CEO.

Tuxera NTFS for Mac is quickly becoming a must-have for consumers who migrate from Windows to Mac, and wish to fully use their Windows-formatted hard drives and memory sticks from the new system. Tuxera has also sold volume licenses to universities and media production companies, which have mixed Windows and Mac environments with tens or hundreds of computers.

Tuxera NTFS for Mac can be downloaded from http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/.

Tuxera Becomes SD Association Member to Meet the Industry Needs in Data Portability
Tuxera exFAT Fuels the Adoption of SDXC, the Next Generation SD Card Technology

HELSINKI, FINLAND. Tuxera Ltd, the creator of the leading NTFS and exFAT solutions for Linux and other operating systems, celebrates the 10th anniversary of SD Association as a full member. After joining SD Association in 2009, Tuxera has been actively contributing to the adoption of SDXC, the next-generation SD memory card standard.

Tuxera CEO Mikko Välimäki explains: “SDXC lifts the 32GB maximum size limit for SD cards and also the 4GB maximum file size limit. These are due to the novel exFAT file system. Tuxera has been working with Microsoft the last six months to offer exFAT for any non-Windows operating system. I am confident that we have now the market leading exFAT implementation and we can give unmatched exFAT support to the first companies adopting SDXC in their host devices.”

Tuxera offers the actual exFAT file system software solution and licenses it to customers and partners while Microsoft offers exFAT patent coverage and specifications. Tuxera also offers technical exFAT integration and support services to any customer on a non-Windows platform.

“In Tuxera, reliability and interoperability come always first. During SD Association’s interoperability sessions, where SDXC host device and card manufacturers meet, we will ensure that Tuxera exFAT is in practice fully compatible with every implementation in the market.” notes Szabolcs Szakacsits, Tuxera CTO, and continues: “In addition, we will not only confirm compliance with the standard, we also innovate on top of it. Tuxera’s portable exFAT implementation already includes all the performance and feature innovations we have made during our market-leading NTFS file system development in the last ten years.”

The Association encourages the development of consumer electronic, wireless communication, digital imaging and networking products that utilize market-leading SD technology. The SD standard is the number one choice for consumers and has earned nearly 80 percent of the memory card market with its reliable interoperability and its easy-to-use format. Today, mobile phones, Blu-ray players, HDTVs, audio players, automotive multimedia systems, handheld PCs, cameras and camcorders feature SD interoperability.

Nokia and Intel announced yesterday the merge of Maemo and Moblin called MeeGo. At face value, the news were not so surprising as Android is taking market share very quickly at the moment. In between the lines, the news strongly indicate that Linux will sooner than later become the dominant platform for cool phones. Nokia’s Ari Jaaksi says:

Make you stuff work under, inside, or on top of MeeGo and you get your stuff deployed all over the place. Nokia will ship tons of MeeGo devices, Intel, too

This is good news for companies like Tuxera. We are ready to support data portability on any Linux-based mobile device, be it running Android or MeeGo. For example shooting 1080p video into the device’s flash card requires in practice a file system change from FAT32 to exFAT. Tuxera exFAT works inside Android and MeeGo to manage that change.

Following the latest release, Tuxera NTFS for Mac is receiving positive reviews all over the net. For example movie and television industry veteran David Roth Weiss has in mind a use case where large movie files are post-produced on a Mac and then submitted to clients who have PCs:

Until Tuxera, the 4Gb file size limitation made it impossible to copy files over 4Gb to a FAT32 formatted drive, and NTFS formatted drives could only be read on Macs, writing to them was not possible. … that could be a real deal breaker for many editors on Macs. Tuxera changes all that, and creates a seamless method for delivering files on hard drives to your PC-based clients.

Earlier also MacObserver picked Tuxera as the NTFS solution for Mac.
