You can format external drives now exFAT under OS X. You may also notice Tuxera exFAT option — we have had our own implementation running on OS X for testing purposes some time already…

This is of course great news for Tuxera as the industry’s first and foremost exFAT provider. Default platform support from Microsoft and now also from Apple is going to further accelerate exFAT adoption. Tuxera has already worked hard to extend exFAT platform support beyond Tuxera exFAT for Android and Linux where we started from (see also our joint exFAT for Linux white paper with Microsoft). We recently published news how QNX chose Tuxera to implement exFAT on their operating system, which has been now delivered to the first customers. HELSINKI, FINLAND – September 22, 2010 – Tuxera Inc., the leading provider of interoperable exFAT and NTFS file systems, today announced that it has ported its exFAT and NTFS file systems to QNX Software Systems Co.’s QNX® Neutrino® RTOS, the leading operating system for in-car infotainment and telematics systems.

Tuxera also announced that the read-write Tuxera exFAT file system for the QNX Neutrino RTOS is now available for immediate deployment. Tuxera NTFS for the QNX Neutrino RTOS was released previously.

Tuxera’s interoperable file system solutions bring seamless plug-and-play interoperability to demanding audio and video applications. For example, in the automotive industry, manufacturers are adding USB and SD memory card interfaces to infotainment systems. Computex Taipei is finally over and done for 2010. A great event, with a lot of interesting electronics. It is clear the current semiconductor hotspot is here. From NAS systems to set-top-boxes, from cameras to phones, everything is packed together in Taipei or the nearby cities. In connection with Computex we did a joint press release with Microsoft on Tuxera exFAT for Linux.

The scenery in Taipei is unique. A quick escape from Taipei101 to Meokong for an afternoon tea shows everything from modern high-tech architecture to unreachable rainforest jungle in less than an hour. While it was raining almost every day I found the climate pleasant: warm but not too hot. You could walk with a T-shirt around the clock.

Make you stuff work under, inside, or on top of MeeGo and you get your stuff deployed all over the place. Nokia will ship tons of MeeGo devices, Intel, too

This is good news for companies like Tuxera. We are ready to support data portability on any Linux-based mobile device, be it running Android or MeeGo. For example shooting 1080p video into the device’s flash card requires in practice a file system change from FAT32 to exFAT. Tuxera exFAT works inside Android and MeeGo to manage that change.

Brief answers to frequently asked questions so far:

• The agreements do not allow us to distribute end-user or open source exFAT drivers for Linux. We are communicating with Microsoft and hope to do that in the near future. A solution is needed before exFAT becomes a de facto standard.
• The agreements do not change anything regarding NTFS drivers. We will continue to distribute and support NTFS-3G both under GPL and commercial licenses.
