The Tuxera NTFS for Mac code base is very different from the NTFS code in the built in Mac OS X driver. It builds upon the stable NTFS-3G code base to deliver maximum features and compatibility.

The NTFS driver that is built into Mac OS X is not supported by Apple in read/write mode, and it doesn't incorporate the latest developments in NTFS-3G. Using it in read/write mode is on your own risk, and I have heard that there have been incidents. Even though we are also somewhat involved in its development, we cannot provide support for that driver at this time.

Hi Tobias,

It's possible to compile a 'safe' 64-bit version of MacFUSE from our code right now, but it would be so restricted in functionality that it's not a proper general purpose solution.
When used in this 'embedded' form, it's ok since there is only one 'client' for the MacFUSE kernel extension (i.e. Tuxera NTFS for Mac). MacFUSE has to deal with a lot of different 'clients' (sshfs, ntfs-3g, fuse-ext2, god knows what...) which makes it more vulnerable to strange behaviour from individual clients (i.e. unexpected delays, etc. which would affect all file systems).

When we have solved all concurrency issues in a way that is suitable for general purpose use we will publish the changes. The source code for our current 'embedded MacFUSE' is available <a href="http://www.tuxera.com/mac/tufs-tuxera_ntfs-2010.9.7.tar.bz2" rel="nofollow">here</a> if you want to play around with it.

Regards,

- Erik

Hello Eric

Does this mean that there will be a 64bit-version of macfuse soon to be openly usable for different file-systems or is the code so much embedded in the tuxera NTFS-driver that the 64bit-capability is limited to it?

Best regards
Tobias
