Files written by ntfs-3g appear as "shared" under Vista
Hello,
First of all, I'd like to mention that, barring this little problem, I've had no other issues with ntfs3g, and it's been of tremendous help in ensuring compatibility between my dual-booted Vista and Ubuntu installs. Keep up the good work, guys! :)
The title says it all, really... Files written to (created or edited) from within my Linux install via the ntfs3g driver appear as "Shared" under Vista and I have to copy them to another folder to remove this attribute. Other than that, the files are intact, but it would be nice if one didn't come across this mild annoyance :)
I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha 4 and the latest ntfs-3g package it comes with, but I had the same problem even with Hardy and Intrepid and the ntfs-3g versions available at that time.

I have had this same "issue". You can right click the file and press the "share..." selection and then when the window comes up just click stop sharing.

Re: Files written by ntfs-3g appear as "shared" under Vista
Hi, Quote: Files written to (created or edited) from within my Linux install via the ntfs3g driver appear as "Shared" under Vista What do you mean by "shared", I do not see this concept in Vista file properties. Is this related to remote access (eg with Samba) ? (I am not using an english language version, could be a wording problem). From the file protection point of view, standard ntfs-3g create files as owned by Administrator and fully accessible to everyone. If this is not what you want, you should use the Advanced version and map Linux users to Vista users. See http://pagesperso-orange.fr/b.andre/adv ... fs-3g.htmlRegards Jean-Pierre

Re: Files written by ntfs-3g appear as "shared" under Vista
When he says shared he means exactly that. What I think seems to be happening is that Vista is noticing a file it did not create and thereby labels it shared. For example, lets say you have two computers connected by way of network. You can create one folder that is located on the two computer which are labeled as shared (so both computers recognize it as the same folder). When you place an item in the folder the other computer that is connected to it will recognize that file right. The same thing is happening here. Only difference is that this is a one way process, in which OSX is the only one that can share. If vista were to suddenly recognize the OSX partition it would label the entire drive as "shared" since it did not create it.

Hi, Quote: What I think seems to be happening is that Vista is noticing a file it did not create and thereby labels it shared After which actions do you see a file marked as "shared" ? Is this a file property (stored in the file system) or a property of remote access (stored in the registry) ? Regards Jean-Pierre

Regards Jean-Pierre When you are booted into OSX and you drag a folder/file into the Windows HD, the files PROPERTIES state that the file is being shared. It can't really be considered a problem with NTFS-3G because it is Vista that is applying the property, and it is not really doing anything wrong. This is what it made to do by default. There is nothing to fix.

Is the file local to Vista when Vista accesses it ? If so, from Vista point of view, in what a shared file is different from a non-shared one ? Quote: There is nothing to fix Good news. Still wanting to understand. Regards Jean-Pierre

Regards Jean-Pierre When you are booted into Windows Vista and you are looking at the icon of lets say a Word document it shows you that it is shared with the two people together symbol like the messenger for mac icon but in the corner of the documents icon. When you look at the file booted in OSX it appears to be perfectly normal. A shared file will be allowed to be seen by any computer with network access to that computer which now that I think about it, unless the user has properly set up could pose a security threat. Just on a side note here. If the .DS_Store files can be made to be hidden in both Vista and OSX alike that would be awesome cause its really annoying to have to delete them every time.

Hi, Your "shared" property must be related to the file protections. Of course in my situation, using advanced ntfs-3g with umask 002, the files are only readable by anybody. Attachment:

It is not permissions related. I checked. When you right click a file and select the "share..." option, that's what were talking about. I removed Vista from my system so I cannot show you.
