Anyone who has started up a car with an IVI (in-vehicle infotainment) system might be painfully familiar with the following scenario: you wait for your navigation dashboard to boot up… and you wait… then wait some more, until the screen finally flickers to life. It’s an unfortunately common annoyance given the growing quantities of data that connected car systems are required to process and store. Sluggish boot times of infotainment systems and information clusters aren’t just damaging to the end user experience, they’re also a safety concern. That’s why mastering boot time efficiency is increasingly important.

We caught up with Bernd Niedermeier, our Head of Automotive Business Development here at Tuxera, to get an idea of how rapid a fast boot solution can be in practice. “Hello, my name is Bernd Niedermeier and I’m responsible for automotive sales in Europe at Tuxera. Automotive systems – in particular infotainment systems – are getting more and more complex, with more functionality and connectivity. And boot time is getting more focus because of that, for OEMs – they want to provide the best user experience for their customers.”

“We all might have experienced a situation where we get into our car, turn it on, and then it still takes 30 seconds – up to even one minute – until we can enter the navigation goal. This is something that can be handled with different quick boot solutions, and one of those solutions we’re going to take a look at is Ubiquitous QuickBoot solution by Tuxera. What we have here is a system based on a Renesas H3 processor, which is running on a Kingfisher sub-board, and on the board is an Android 8.1 system.

What we’re going to do is turn it on and see how fast we can actually interact with the system. So I’m turning it on right now, and after about three to four seconds, we should see the screen come up, and be able to make the first calls, or go directly into the seat heating menu or the navigation, and have the street map running.”

“The way we’re achieving this fast boot time is a flavor of hibernation where we don’t take a complete hibernation scheme, but a prioritized restoration of the image. That image gets configured with a software development kit in a very flexible way that allows us to define if there is a certain image that always comes up when we turn on the system. Or, if it’s the last position where the customer is in, turns off the engine right now, and then the next time it comes up exactly there. And that’s within three to four seconds on an Android system, where usually you will have to wait 20 or 30 seconds, at least. The same solution works also for Linux based systems, where again we will be able to boot such a system up in three seconds to operability.”
