Combining Embedded and Enterprise

Tuxera ESC connects IoT, printer, medical, and industrial devices to servers using the SMB protocol, the most common remote file system on earth. No matter if your data is on Fusion SMB, Windows Server, NetApp, Samba, Dell EMC, or countless other file servers, Tuxera client unites your Linux-based devices with reliable and secure communications while bringing ultra-low CPU, memory, & storage footprint.

With Tuxera ESC, data moves from your embedded devices to centralized file servers for easy access from all your Windows and macOS users.

Tuxera’s experienced engineering team also brings expert integration support to ensure your embedded devices are running SMB in production with minimal effort.

With 40 years of embedded system experience and 10 years of experience with enterprise-grade SMB, you can trust Tuxera with both your most mission-critical production workloads and your broadest enterprise base.

What does ESC
deliver?

Embedded SMB Clients in Networked Devices

SMB (Server Message Block) is the protocol that lets Windows. macOS and Linux machines share files, printers, and resources across a network. Embedding an SMB client directly into hardware devices is a meaningful architectural shift for many workflows offering considerable time savings and additional security.

Reducing the steps needed to move data in and out of devices running Tuxera ESC It delivers a comprehensive, stable, efficient, modern, enterprise-grade SMB client for embedded Linux builds

How we fit into and host systems

The hardware devices mount shares from an SMB server. They can then read and write data to the server.

Data created by the device is then available to any client system connected to the server.

Alternatively, data uploaded to the SMB server will be accessible by the connected devices.
Security is controlled by Active Directory, Kerberos, and encryption.

Key features

Printers

  • The printer can push scanned documents directly to a network share
  • Users can print documents straight from network shares via printer control panels
  • Completed print jobs or scan metadata can be written directly to an administrative audit share
  • Increases the storage volume of the printer by giving access to remote volumes

Microscopes

  • High-resolution images and video captures are written directly to a lab NAS or image file servers the moment they’re acquired
  • Images are automatically organised into patient folders or experiment directories on the server
  • Eliminates the “sneakernet” problem, no more USB drives, memory cards, or manual uploads
  • Enables automated pipelines: for example, a microscope captures an image → writes to a share → an analysis server picks it up and runs image processing automatically

Medical Equipment

  • Devices can write patient data, logs, and readings directly to an EHR-connected file drop on the hospital network
  • Eliminates manual data transcription — a major source of clinical error
  • Enables continuous, passive logging of vitals, dosing events, or diagnostic results to a shared location accessible by clinical staff from any workstation
  • Supports centralised device management — configuration files can be read from a network share, so IT can push firmware configs or calibration data without physically touching each device
  • Aligns with HL7/DICOM workflows where imaging devices write files to shared directories that feeding systems then ingest
