From our open-source roots, Tuxera has grown into a global leader in commercial-grade file systems and storage software. For decades, we’ve teamed up with the world’s top tech companies to shape the future of storage and data management through partnerships, associations, and of course, our customers themselves, and we’ve always focused on building high-performance solutions for systems that can’t afford to slow down. Today, we boast the largest team of file systems and storage developers in the world.
Tuxera’s story began with two Linux enthusiasts: Szabolcs (Szaka) Szakacsits in Finland and Anton Altaparmakov in the UK. Szaka, working at F-Secure, was studying NTFS technology, while Anton, a student at Cambridge, was developing NTFS drivers. Their passion for Linux laid the groundwork for what would later become Tuxera.
In 2007, Szaka launched the NTFS-3G project, which caught commercial attention. In 2008, teaming up with legal expert and professor at the Helsinki University of Technology, Mikko Välimäki, they turned it into a company—NTFS-3G Technology—later renamed Tuxera (after Tux, the Linux penguin). With Mikko as CEO, Szaka as President and CTO, and Anton as Lead Developer, they secured deals with Microsoft and built a strong team.
Tuxera expanded into Asia and the US, partnering with major chipset companies. In 2014, we began developing Tuxera SMB (today known as FusionSMB), and in 2016 we expanded our partnership with Microsoft with the official launch of Tuxera SMB.
We expanded our product portfolio and continued our story of innovation with three new product launches. In 2019, we acquired Datalight, followed by HCC Embedded in 2021, strengthening our focus on mission-critical data solutions.
Today, Tuxera boasts the most embedded file system developers in one house on the planet. We specialize in ultra-reliable data solutions for mission-critical workloads. Since 2022, we’ve helped global cloud providers and storage vendors tackle complex data challenges with speed, scale, and reliability. Our eyes are on the horizon, and we aim to grow.
As demand for faster, more reliable data storage grows, we’re doubling down on industries like smart energy, cloud, defense, and industrial automation, where high-performance, secure data storage and access is critical. We’re strengthening partnerships with cloud providers and streamlining our portfolio to prioritize scalability and interoperability, ensuring customers can move, store, and access data whenever they need it.
