Tuxera SnapFS

Efficient system updates. Simplified data layer. Less Storage.

SnapFS is an embedded file system built for safety-certified systems with snapshotting and subvolumes built-in to replace A/B duplication for system updates and fixed partitioning. Stop reserving storage “just in case,” and simplify the data layer: smaller OTA updates, shared storage between apps, and built-in data integrity and authenticity validation.

Product overview

Your software keeps growing.

The storage layout with fixed partitions are sized at design phase, years before the software that will fill them is written. Each one has to be sized for its worst case, and A/B updates reserve a second full image on top. Over a 15–20 year life, applications grow at different rates and new use cases arrive while the partitions remain the same. One partition fills while the next sits half empty, and the reserved space stays on the bill of materials for every unit you ship.

SnapFS is built for exactly this. It is one embedded file system that does three things:

  • Sending smaller OTA updates — only the changes, not a full image.
  • Letting applications share a storage pool instead of a fixed individual partition.
  • Preventing data corruption and tampering, inside the file system.

It runs on Linux, VxWorks, Integrity or any other OS, on managed flash (eMMC, UFS, SD, NVMe) and on raw NAND/NOR together with Tuxera FlashFX Tera.

KEY FEATURES

Ship smaller OTA updates and roll back in one step

  • OTA packages up to 90% smaller than full-image updates — less to download, less to push across the fleet
  • No A/B partitioning, so you get back up to 50% of the space it used to reserve
  • A failed update always return to known-good state, never a broken half-state
  • Use a snapshot as a factory-reset point or an on-device backup

Give every app the space it needs – without fixed partitions

  • One shared storage pool instead of rigid partitions
  • Cap applications with Quota, guarantee for critical apps with Reservations
  • Applications stay isolated — one filling up doesn’t starve another
  • Flexibility for post-launch features, no re-partitioning

Catch corruption and tampering before it reaches your app

  • User data and metadata are protected with a Merkle tree
  • Silent corruption and tampering are caught; a bad read fails safely
  • Pick the hash strength per subvolume
  • Power-fail safe by design

Why do I need this now?

Three things are hitting your flash at the same time. Software keeps growing on hardware you can’t change. Updates are getting bigger and more frequent across the fleet. And flash got more expensive, so every reserved gigabyte costs you. On top of that, regulations like the EU Cyber Resilience Act make secure updates mandatory, not optional. SnapFS is built to take the storage over-provisioning out of all three.

How is this different from A/B partitioning?

A/B keeps two full images and switches between them. It works, but it reserves a second full image on every device for the life of the product, and the partitions are still a fixed size. SnapFS keeps only the changed blocks as snapshots. You still get a rollback point — without paying for a full second copy – and storage can flex at runtime.

Can I use it today?

SnapFS is in active development. A technology preview and early access come before general availability. Leave your details below for updates, or to talk about a pilot on your platform.

  • Subvolumes for a shared storage pool, governed by quotas (per-subvolume limit) and reservations (guaranteed minimum)
  • OS: Linux, VxWorks, INTEGRITY, any RTOS
  • Flash: Managed – UFS, eMMC, SSD, NVMe, etc.; Raw NAND/NOR flash via Tuxera FlashFX Tera
