A smart meter has to run for 15 to 20 years in the field, often without a single technician visit. Two failure mechanisms stand in the way of that service life: power loss that corrupts an in-flight write, and flash wear that ends a device early. Across a fleet of millions, single-digit failure rates compound into real replacement cost and contractual penalty.

There are two established ways to solve both. One adds hardware, ultracapacitors for power loss and over-provisioned flash for wear, and buys reliability as a margin in the bill of materials. The other engineers the fix into the embedded software, with a power-fail-safe file system and a flash-aware storage stack, and leaves the hardware untouched. Technically and commercially, these two paths are not equivalent.
