Tuxera and the SD Association have worked together for more than a decade on the evolution and maintenance of the SD Memory Card Formatter to increase the efficiency, performance and longevity of all types of SD memory cards.
This update is the latest action to facilitate optimized use of SDUC memory cards across all major operating systems.
HELSINKI and San Ramon, Calif., January 23, 2024 – The SD Association (SDA) released an updated SD Memory Card Formatter compatible with the newest ultra capacity SDUC memory cards, larger than 2 TB, up to 128TB. The latest SD Memory Card Formatter can be used for existing SD, SDHC and SDXC as well. This update is available for Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems and is the latest move taken by the SDA to ensure the smooth adoption of these new cards. Tuxera collaborated with the SDA to deliver this new capability.
To ensure the smooth adoption of SDUC, the SDA has taken a number of preparatory steps including publishing the SDUC Host Implementation Guideline, creating the SD7.1 Test Guideline for Host products (available for SDA members), working with operating systems and other product manufacturers to ensure SD memory card drivers support SDUC. There are also test tools available by SDA members supporting SDUC, giving manufacturers the ability to test products for compliance with SDA standards.
SDUC memory cards only work in host devices with updated drivers supporting SDUC. The SDA encourages all product manufacturers, chipset vendors and OS vendors to update all SD drivers to support SDUC memory cards immediately to ensure their customers’ will be able to utilize SDUC memory cards with their products.
Tuxera, a board member of the SD Association since 2019, is an international leader in quality-assured data storage management and networking technologies, with expertise in developing embedded file systems and optimizing the speed and integrity of data storage on devices like SD cards.
Tuxera and the SD Association have worked together for more than a decade on the evolution and maintenance of the SD Memory Card Formatter to increase the efficiency, performance and longevity of all types of SD memory cards.
“The SDA worked with Tuxera to ensure SDUC memory cards stay compliant with our specifications so that they deliver the best possible performance for everyone,” said Yosi Pinto, Chairman of the SD Association. “Ensuring SDUC support for Linux, macOS and Windows is vital for these new ultra large capacity cards ensuring interoperability with all host devices.”
For almost 25 years, SD memory cards have been a trusted and near-universal method of safely storing everything from industrial information to personal memories.
The SD Memory Card Formatter can format and restore the card to be fully compliant with SD specification standards, ensuring the SD memory card will have the maximum lifetime and best performance with all SD host devices. In addition, because some operating system formatters may not be optimized for a card, they may provide less data reliability and integrity. The SDA offers the Formatter for free from its website:
