Understanding the importance of Automated Patch Clamp (APC)
Sophion Bioscience develops advanced Automated Patch Clamp (APC) systems that accelerate drug discovery and disease research by enabling precise ion channel measurements at scale. Ion channels govern essential biological processes such as neural signaling, cardiac rhythm, and pain transmission. Understanding how new compounds affect ion channel activity is a foundational step in identifying safe and effective medicines.
Historically, patch-clamp experiments were performed manually, one cell at a time that was slow, labor-intensive, and highly dependent on expert skill. Sophion’s APC platforms automate this process by equipping each recording channel with its own amplifier, like the “ears and muscles” of the system, capable of measuring tiny picoamp currents while applying precise voltage control. This allows laboratories to run dozens or hundreds of experiments in parallel, dramatically increasing throughput and accelerating time-to-insight.
Why real-time data integrity Is mission-critical
To make this automation possible, each APC system depends on extremely reliable real-time communication between multiple measurement subsystems, amplifiers, and a connected Windows PC. Every few hundred milliseconds, control commands, parameters, and large volumes of electrophysiology data flow through ethernet-based communication. Each data point is important for the scientific research and contributes to key biological insights.
The impact of data-loss is significant: inaccurate ion channel data can misguide drug development, misidentify toxicity signals, or distort biological responses, ultimately affecting decisions with direct implications for patient safety and scientific progress.
Selecting a reliable networking stack
When evaluating networking solutions for their platform, Sophion considered two alternatives and ultimately selected Tuxera’s MISRA-compliant TCP/IP stack. The decision was driven by the stack’s well-structured architecture, clear API design, strong alignment with MISRA-C coding guidelines, and its proven suitability for industrial applications. These qualities made it easier to maintain and integrate the stack within their embedded environment.
Reliability was essential: the network stack needed to handle continuous, high-frequency bidirectional communication without affecting timing or measuring precision. Sophion also appreciated the responsiveness and clarity of the engineering support provided, from technical evaluation queries to implementation questions.
A partnership built on quality and support
Sophion consistently highlighted the value of Tuxera support during the project.
As Wenxi Jin, Software & Hardware Engineer, shared with the Tuxera engineering team, “We highly appreciate the great effort. I can see all the hard work you and the team have put in to provide the deliverables as promised,”
Jens Henneke, Senior Hardware Manager, added, “Having a robust and stable internal data communication is key for our instrumentation, and the Tuxera TCP/IP stack has been a great part of that.”
This collaborative, dependable relationship helped ensure a smooth integration and reinforced Sophion’s confidence in the solution.
Strengthening Sophion’s APC platforms
With Tuxera’s deterministic TCP/IP stack integrated into the QPatch product family, Sophion delivers APC systems that provide exceptional data quality, scalable throughput, and the automation needed to meet global pressures in ion channel research such as increasing efficiency, reducing dependency on scarce specialized staff, and enabling reliable unattended operation.
