CES Trends: Data is the New Frontier

Fast, secure data access is essential in the workings of every smart device and ecosystem. Even from behind the scenes it played a big role at this year's CES. Data is at the center of almost every innovation - autonomous cars, camera drones and consumer IoT. At the same time it presents the biggest challenge of all. Huge amount of data is being continuously recorded to enable smart home and car. Recorded to a local storage it can lead to flash memory wear-out, file fragmentation and memory corruption that can cause frame drops. To be processed in a real time it needs to be recorded at a stable, high speed without any lag or slowdown.

Connected Car

autonomous driving Connected car is a fast emerging consumer tech category. It was the star of CES, where almost every major car brand was showcasing latest automated features, which move far beyond adaptive cruise control or lane assist. In the advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving data is being recorded from multiple sensors and the cameras helping the car safely assess the situation on the road. Around the clock the system is bombarded with information from many different sources including traffic flow, vehicle maintenance and manufacturer updates. Facial monitoring, gestures and voice control are being developed to enable hands-off driving. However at this point most of the implemented technologies require driver's hands on the steering wheel. Despite automotive players heavily investing in the new features, most probably we will not see a fully autonomous car until 2020.

Internet of Things

connected cars Cross-device connectivity is becoming reality with tighter smartphone integration and much improved link with the smart home. Advanced IoT systems allow to coordinate and access smart home devices from the outside and easy sync across multiple applications. Current main disruptors of the industry include: mobility, broadband and the cloud. Home automation itself is moving rapidly forward thanks to IoT consortiums such as AllSeen Alliance driving the ultimate device interoperability. CES saw an abundance of smart appliances outfitted with sensors including intelligent fridges and washers. Samsung went as far as offering a family hub that centers around the smart fridge. Every smart home system is now featuring camera monitoring that records events around the clock and sends alerts directly to your mobile phone. As the number of connected devices continues to grow, we need fast and robust home networks to sustain multiple applications running at the same time, heavy content transfers and high resolution video streaming.

Flash Friendly Solutions: Powering Connected Cars

By 2020 we will have 50 billion internet-enabled devices and connected car recently became one of the links in the Internet of Things chain encompassing all intelligent devices. Integrated with home systems it is able access users' content on the go. Connected car technology can be looked at from several functional areas:

  • Autonomous driving: currently the most talked about and fastest growing feature, which is being driven primarily by growing demand in China and the US. Although some functionalities such as autonomous parking and congestion navigation are already included, full deployment is expected to take off only between 2020 and 2025
  • Safety: another of  the key selling points for the connected car driven by a high demand from China. Includes danger warning and collision prevention systems. Increasingly popular sensors provide a steady stream of data on vehicle movements, wear and tear, and outside conditions. Advanced features allows the car to analyze the data and issue controls to stay in the lane, brake on its own, maintain safe distance from the car in front or even change lanes.
  • Entertainment: especially in Asia it is considered a basic automotive function. Customers expect seamless integration with personal devices such as smartphones, tablets, wearables and various types of storage. This includes unrestricted access to the content on the go, traffic information and up to date navigation.
  • Well-being: following safety concerns this feature is starting to gain traction with fatigue detection systems and emergency breaking in case driver blacks out.
  • Vehicle management: important for car brands to schedule remote software updates and monitor performance.
  • Mobility management: recommendation system for navigation based on constant flow of information that needs to be analyzed and processed in the real time.
  • Home integration: as customers are embracing home automation they expect to expand that experience to the car being able to access content stored stored at home and remotely control house environment.

Connected Car Challenges

As smart cars are slowly turning into mini connected data centers the flash memory is used as a default storage. Intensive use through always-on apps, which download and write data around the clock, can wear out the physical flash memory limited by the number of write cycles. Optimized for flash, Tuxera solutions reduce flash memory wear-out, significantly extending the system's lifetime.

Autonomous driving and advanced safety features require constant recording of huge amount of data from cameras and sensors, which can cause memory corruption. Tuxera prevents file system corruption and ensures 100% data and system integrity in every possible scenario. It also maintains multiple data recording streams running at the highest speeds possible for an extended period of time so there are no delays in data access.

Family Share: Enjoy Content On All Devices

On average people have 3 internet-connected devices per person and that number is forecasted to increase to 5 by 2020. Out of those, 64% multiscreen while watching TV. Thanks to multiple screens and speakers, everyone can enjoy movies and music whenever they want. However, the abundance of cloud services, content networks and media storage options poses a certain challenge to access all of that content at the same time. Things get more complicated when a group of friends or a family of three or more wants to decide what music or movies to play.

Tuxera's AllConnect makes it easy to share multiple contents to multiple devices at the same time. Using just one source, one can stream music to the speakers, movie to the big screen and a YouTube video to a tablet. Kids can enjoy their cartoons, while parents relax on the couch with a favorite movie. It works as well for a casual party at home where everyone can take turns playing their music and for a road trip during which everyone can stay entertained while the driver focuses on the road.

IoT

New AllConnect App is available for a download at the Google Play Store. iOS version will follow soon. User friendly interface displays all the available devices nearby to enable full control over the connected home. We will be showcasing how it works at Tuxera Technology Showcase at CES. Don't forget to book your meeting!
